New Thermomix TM5 Announced Today: Not available to North America until 2015

Did you wait for the iphone 5 when the iphone 4 came out, or buy the iphone 4…. well, I bought the 4 before the 5 came out, but I knew it was coming out. My contract was up, and I really needed a phone. How much better could the 5 be? I got the 5 when my contract needed renewing. So, new Thermomix customers have some decisions to make. Do you want the best kitchen machine in the world now, or do you want to wait for the new one? Bottom line: the new machine is not adding another component into the cooking abilities of this exceptional machine. The changes address the operating system of the machine. That is well worth keeping in mind, when making your Thermomix purchasing decision this year.

There will always be a new machine. What is the right time for you? Now, is the time. Now is the time for the Thermomix TM31, I say. Not just because I sell them. But, because I love mine, I couldn’t see improving it – but, they have found a way to bring it into the 21st century through digitizing this machine. However, I love my machine as it is. A digitized machine would probably be great fun, too. Just like my iphone 4, until I got the 5, I didn’t know what I was missing. So, you decide. The benefits of this new machine are significant, yet small. Similar to the differences between the iphones. I think you get the message…. watch the video, and read on.

As you can see, the new Thermomix TM5 is now available, but not in North America. Not yet. The introduction of the TM5 acknowledges the digital age of cooking is rearing its head into our own home kitchens. The Thermomix is the world’s smallest most effective kitchen, and has consistently been the leader of the pack where kitchen appliances are concerned. This is no exception. The Thermomix is more popular than ever, and Thermomix fans around the world are always waiting for the next generation – just like iphone fans!

Vorwerk cannot, however, launch the new Thermomix TM5 simultaneously in all the countries where it is sold. Like many other companies, Vorwerk will have to introduce the new appliance gradually, due to our production and logistics reasons. The new Thermomix will be launched in Canada at a later date next year. Do you see the arms around the lid in the photo, above? These arms will hold the lid in place and programmed with a time delay release as a safety feature when the contents of the machine are extremely hot. The bowl is 1/2 liter larger and the machine heats a little hotter. How much, we don’t know, yet. Between now and the Canadian release date, I anticipate an increase in the number of questions you will ask about this machine, and I will answer every one of your questions to the best of my ability and find out an answer, if I don’t know it, so ask away in the comment section below. As you can see, above, the new machine will be fully digitized with a screen in the front.

There will be a recipe chip that fits into the side of the machine. You select the recipe you want, put the ingredients into the bowl, and the machine will do the rest, according to the instructions programmed into the chip.

Eight hundred thousand TM31 machines sold globally last year, alone. The TM31 is built to last a life time, and though it has been rethought and transformed into the TM5, it doesn’t negate the ability and performance of this machine. Canada is definitely in the transition phase. We are adding value to the TM31 sales now that are incredible. So, you have to decide. Wait for the new one, or buy the old classic tried and true version with all of the incentives added.What will you do?

I have to be honest. The first time I saw the TM31, I thought, “Hmmm. A little space aged in appearance. Not something too appealing.” I find the Thermomix TM5  less appealing in design, but understanding the functions, don’t know how I could create a more appealing one. It is comparable in appearance to the TM31.

The comparison diagram above should help you understand the differences. Significant, yet subtle, really. The biggest change is the digital ability. The TM31 goes to 120 C at Varoma, yet this machine is designed for more heat. We are all waiting for the specifications, and when they come out, you will be the first to know. Exciting times we live in, no? Let me repeat the bottom line: the new machine is not adding another component into the cooking abilities of this exceptional machine. The changes address the operating system of the machine. That is well worth keeping in mind, when making your Thermomix purchasing decision this year.

Answers to Possible Questions from my Distributor at ThermomixCanada.com (FanTan)

Why can’t I buy the new Thermomix TM5 here yet? Why is the old Thermomix still being sold in Canada? Why is the new Thermomix already available in other countries?

Vorwerk will gradually introduce the new Thermomix all over the world due to production and distribution reasons. Until then, we are able to offer you the most successful Thermomix ever: the TM31. It is used in more than five million kitchens world-wide and many chefs rely on it. It unites the functions of 12 appliances in one compact unit and is a kitchen appliance of proven quality and value with our best ever value added offer: a carrying bag and an additional cookbook, plus the option to purchase a second mixing bowl set for $199. (The carry bag retails at 100 dollars and the second bowl at 450.00)

When will the new Thermomix be launched in our market?

The launch date remains undetermined due to the reasons explained above.

Why has Vorwerk made the Canadian clients wait?

Very few manufacturers in the world have the capacity to launch the same product in all countries at the same time. Most of them launch by waves, and that is what Verwork is doing.

How did Vorwerk select which countries would be the first to sell the new Thermomix?

At Vorwerk, it is a business policy and successful tradition to offer just one product from the Thermomix division per country. Some Vorwerk affiliates and Official Distributors are still selling the TM31 in some countries for a transitional period. They will gradually introduce the new Thermomix all over the world due to production and distribution reasons. so Canada is not the only country that will have to wait to access the new machine.

Is the TM31 still being produced?

the new Thermomix is currently being produced at plants in Germany and France. The TM31 is no longer under production, yet there are still many left to sell.

Why should customers buy a TM31 if the new Thermomix is going to be launched here soon too? 

I believe I answered, or at the very least, thoroughly addressed this question in my post, above.

The TM31 is already being discontinued. So why does Vorwerk still expect people to pay such a high price for it?

The TM31 is the best product ever launched by Thermomix and worth every penny; however, there are incredible incentives being offered. It is company policy to never reduce the price. That will not happen. Ever.

    Hi Valerie,

    A great post about the continuing value of the TM31 and the subtle changes in the TM 5 which we were surprised with here in Australia just yesterday! I love my 31 and that is not going to change, no matter how many new models come out over its lifetime, it has been a game changer in our home and will be loved just as TM21 owners continued to love theirs!

    That said, I am really excited to pick up its little sister tomorrow (oh my goodness..it is today already) and have a play. Essentially the TM 5 is like the second born, (non identical) twin, as you said, they are so similar in functions. Sure they look a little different but they are both fabulous and I know we are going to love them equally, for different reasons!

    Why did I order the TM 5 if I love the (two!) TM 31s I already have? Because, as a consultant in Australia, I am required to have the model we sell to demonstrate to people. Why have I chosen to do that instead of going back to my day job? Because I love it. I love helping people to meet their dietary needs, helping get them back to cooking real food (without much extra effort) and helping to reduce the financial and emotional stress that a simple meal time can put on a family these days! You can do that with either TM!

    P.S Just wanted to let you know a couple of the specs that we were told as you mentioned above. The TM 5 bowl is 2.2L (not quite the 1/2L) and the top temp, as you mentioned, is 120 degrees Celsius. The TM 31 has Varoma temp of 114 degrees so there are just 6 degrees of seperation;) Also, (I belive it will be the same for you all), the chip is also avaolable in book form so you can choose either format and you can override what the chip is saying to do so you are still in total control with both models:D

        You are so welcome. There are a lot of people over here who wish they were in the shoes of your customers as you are all lucky enough to have the choice and know what is coming. My household is split. My husband and Mum love the 31 better, my daughter, the 5. It is really a personal choice and to be totally honest, they are not that different. With the value added package you can get with the 31 that you were talking about…wow! Either way, they are both a fantastic product I am really happy with both!

      I haven’t heard a BOO about this, but I would think that 10 years ago would have been the time for this. If they don’t open a US site now, they are nuts-o! And, I know this is a company that has their act together (with the exception of having the new machine ready for Canadian distribution alongside the rest of the world)…. in any case, I would imagine that as we have to wait until well into 2015, and that the electrical supply is the same throughout North America, that now is the time for Verwork International to open a US Thermomix centre – but, most likely, they will align their launch with ours. At least, I would hope so. I can not imagine it being sooner, as the only difference between our two countries is that Canada uses metric math and US uses imperial. I would imagine that the machine will remain in metric, but all of this is speculative thinking – with a truckload of experience. ;0

    With the higher temperatures, is the food safe plastic still safe to use (BPA)?

    I know TM did tests, but they were on a lower heat.

    I perused everything I could find last week when Thermomix sent a letter to Australian owners of the TM31 that a new model was out. I like the increase in heat and the larger bowl but I can’t justify (another) 2 grand when I’m perfectly happy with the machine I have.

    Hi to all
    I have had the privilege to own 2 TM’s 31 for several years, I am a demonstrator, I use my second one to show customers how wonderful they are let them have it for a week and they are hooked.
    However I was at the launch in London and along comes the TM 5 what a surprise to us all. Now with digital technology iPhones etc, we all go there.
    Don’t get me wrong it is a fabulous machine bigger bowl higher temp, recipes in a chip, all the gismos. But the TM 31 is equally good in its own right.
    However as an advisor I now have the TM 5 and shall lend one out to whoever might like to buy one.
    Should we go with the times?

    Just returned from Lucerne after seeing this fabulous machine. I live in Markham, Ontario Canada and I am interested in purchasing the TM31.
    Question:
    1. Is it available in my town?
    2. If so, can I see it before purchasing?
    3. Total cost?
    4. If any repairs are required in the future – where do I go? Will it ever require any repairs?
    5. The menu chip in TM5 – looks like a major improvement – does the TM31 have it?
    6. How do we add more recipes?

    Hi, we used TM in Switzerland and since have moved to the US, I gave up the TM due to the voltage 🙁 and would love to get one for my wife again. Is there any way to order the TM31 or 5 to ship into the US and will they run 110 without the converter?

    we used TM 5 in Germany. Would it work in the USA. We will stay in New Mexico now for some years. Hopefully with our TM 5. May it runs with a converter ? Where i’ll get one ? And i would like to know if TM5 will be available in the US soon? And if i would buy a now one in USA? What’s about the pricing ?

        How lovely to hear from you. I will also send you a personal email. First, I don’t know who Coralin is, but I am Valerie. Second, I don’t understand the PS. So sorry! 🙂
        But, I can help you with the big questions. If you have a customer moving anywhere in North America, the German machine will only work if your customer buys a transformer (about 150) which is awkward and clunky and will shorten the life of the machine OR if you customer gets a 220v outlet wired into the room she is using the machine in. I know we do the 220v in the laundry room and in the kitchen for stoves… so maybe the code will allow another for a Thermomix from Germany, but I would definitely suggest, for warranty and practical purposes, that she purchase one from here.

    My name is Andrii. I’am an owner of Thermomix TM 31, for more than 4 years. Recently, I’ve moved to Canada. In my own country – Ukraine, I left my Thermomix, because of the differences in voltage. In Ukraine we have 220V and 50/60Hz, here it is 110V. I want to bring my Thermomix to Canada and use it here. Is there any methods (possibilities) to use it in Canada? Can I change mine 220V the Main appliance to yours local 110V? Or can I just switch(change) with your help some mechanisms inside of the Main appliance? Or will it work, if I will use some kind of ” step-up and step down voltage transformers”? will my Thermomix work it that case? Or it will be working just a mechanical parts, not a electronic programs?

      Hi Kimberly
      You will have a few choices moving to the US with your 220 volt machine.
      You can get a 220 plug in installed which will cost you about the same amount as a converter – about 150 dollars.
      We use 220 plug ins for washing machines here.
      You could have an electrician install one in your kitchen…. that would be best – change the plug in end, if it is different. That would be easy.
      Or, you could buy a converter, but it will shorten the life of your machine.
      Any electrical supply store where you move will advise. I have no idea who could do it for you.

    I live in the US and would be interested in buying a Thermomix. I grew up in Germany (hence the strange name 🙂 ), and my mother has had her Thermomix for the last 25 years. So I am familiar with what it can do.

    I am in no rush on this and I can wait until the TM5 ships. However, I doubt there will be a distribution network in the US in the foreseeable future. Hopefully you can sell to people out of the country.

    I also have a TM5 in Australia (where I live for part of the year). If I were to bring my Aussie TM5 to the U.S., what are my power conversion options? (Step-up transformer – I know the voltage, but what wattage would I need?, or changing the plugs like you have mentioned in the above posts)

      Hi Maria,
      Depending upon where you live in Canada and what the electrical code is, and whether you are owning, or buying:
      1. If owning, you can have a 220 plug in installed – depending upon the electrical code in your area…we all have 220 plug ins in our kitchens and laundry rooms for our electric stoves and washing machines.
      2. If not allowed to install that – or not a home owner, you will have to purchase a transformer. I don’t know how or where, but people get them, so likely an electrical supply store can provide that information to you once you move. I understand they are around 150 Canadian to purchase. They do shorten the life of your machine, and are clunky and awkward.

    My mother just bought me the t31 in Germany and sent it to me in the states. Can you tell me what type of voltage transformer I need to make sure it works here and so I don’t burn it up. I looked online but am scared to purchase the wrong one. Thanks I advance!!!

      Seriously, what a wonderful gift! I have no idea, but do find your closest electrical supply store to assist. The life span of your machine will be shortened with any kind of device…. so please do your research carefully. Wish I knew more. Happy cooking!

    Hi, I just purchased a bimby (Thermomix) TM5 in Portugal and I am planning on bringing it back with me to Toronto in a few months. Is this going to be a problem in terms of the voltage difference???? The sale representative said with a Canadian adaptor it should function. I hope he’s right!

    Hi Valerie, I’m currently visiting my family in Germany but live in the US (familiar with the 110/220V issue, having an unused 220V outlet in my house, but it’s in the laundry room where I usually don’t cook …). My parents’ neighbor here in Germany is a Vorwerk consultant, and I’d love to buy the TM5 (for use in the US). What do you recommend? Thanks for your help in advance!
