Got it in Tuesday! (October 23, 2012)
The fresh air and the dirt under my nails was invigorating! The breeze was brisk. It was my first afternoon out of the house and in the garden for weeks. Garlic cloves must be planted as other bulbs, in the fall, root side down. I have not been able to get them in on time before. And, it is not too late if your soil isn’t frozen! I decided to do this entire raised bed in garlic this time.
I planted Jackie Chalmer’s New Oxley Garlic sent to me from her farm near Claresholm, Alberta.
I met Jackie at our Slow Food National Conference 2012 in Edmonton and tasted her garlic then. WOWSERS. Just as good as Sundog Organics. I never thought that would happen! I was too late to get enough from Sundog to plant this year, so was thrilled that Jackie would ship me a box!
Is a garlic a garlic a garlic? No! I have paid big bucks for good garlic and it has been worth it! I have worked to plant my own over the past few years without much success. This time, I feel success coming on! I will keep you informed in the Spring and the truth will be revealed in the fall!

I never really thought about the fact that you could plant a clove of garlic.

Hi there, such a lovely new look and feel to your blog, my friend! I am about to pull my first garlic up. Cross your fingers for me!

I love garlic and have about 60+ heads stored for the winter. I have yet to try my hand at growing them. I am curious to know how many heads you think you might get from that one raised bed. Maybe I am thinking I need more space than I do.

@amwaters!
I only planted 60 cloves which will yield 60 large heads of garlic in that one bed. I could have planted more, but didn’t feel I needed more. Well, maybe it was because I wanted to have enough over the winter, too. I probably could have planted 15 more in that one bed. It does not take much space. For sure!

Thanks for stopping by!
